About the Author
B. Alan Wallace is president of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies. He trained for many years as a monk in Buddhist monasteries in India and Switzerland. He has taught Buddhist theory and practice in Europe and America since 1976 and has served as interpreter for numerous Tibetan scholars and contemplatives, including H. H. the Dalai Lama. After graduating summa cum laude from Amherst College, where he studied physics and the philosophy of science, he earned his MA and PhD in religious studies at Stanford University. He has edited, translated, authored, and contributed to more than thirty books on Tibetan Buddhism, medicine, language, and culture, and the interface between science and religion.

Title: Intro to Buddhist doctrine

Review: The title and subtitle are an accurate description of this book's contents. I would say the emphasis is on the ground more than the up, and in fact emphasizing the ground may be the only practical approach for modern life. The author covers the basics of Buddhism at length and adequately, with a strong emphasis on Buddhist ethics. Mahayana philosophy is dealt with at some length. The section on Tantra at the end is quite short, but very cogent.
So we have a straightforward and fairly complete overview of Buddhist doctrine in its various forms. There are occasional very sharp insights and unusually good explanations of certain concepts, but overall the treatment is on the routine side. There is very limited discussion of meditation or practice; the emphasis is on doctrine and philosophy. The writing is pedestrian. Overall, though there is nothing really wrong with this book, I don't recommend it. There are many general introductions to Buddhism that explain the doctrine as well or better, and also provide some instruction on practice. Those looking for extended treatment of Vajrayana or of Tibetan religious culture will be disappointed.

Review: My teacher suggested this book for anyone new to Tibetan Buddhism. It's well-written and has basic information for some of the most popular questions a new person might have. It's a good "starting point" as well as a good text for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of various paths of life.
